YouthLEAD

Have you ever wanted to do something but aren’t sure how you can make a difference or where to start?

No matter what your concerns are, Youth LEAD can help you develop skills and a plan for action to really do something significant.

Youth LEAD is an OzGREEN initiative that is building a national network of young leaders who are working in their community and beyond to build a life-sustaining society. Youth LEAD is achieving this through leadership training and mentoring for youth led eco-social projects that forge pathways to more sustainable futures. Youth LEAD begins where other leadership programs finish – with young people learning to be leaders by designing and undertaking their own projects.

Through Youth LEAD young people learn how to listen deeply and question strategically. They harness their passion and talents, find focus and direction and develop a clear plan for action. They gain key life skills that enable them to start building the kind of world they want and to take positive creative action on the issues that are of most concern to them. They become young social entrepreneurs and begin to make their unique contribution to a world that is socially just and environmentally sustainable

Youth LEAD already involves over 600 participants across 7 states and territories implementing action plans in their own communities and beyond; 95% of participants rate the program as life-changing and “totally” excellent, relevant and worthwhile.

Case Study - Robbie

RobbieYL200Robbie participated in the Alice Springs 2006 Youth LEAD. Without much expectation of what the workshop would be like, but a lot of leadership experience behind him, he found himself in a “very special program, as it dipped in deep and got all the things out of me that I didn’t think was possible.” Youth LEAD affirmed Robbie’s passion for his strong indigenous culture and the importance of country and environment, allowing him to step up and take the lead on a cultural program that would reconnect his community with their traditional knowledge

Case Study - Nick

In 2003 Nick was in Year 11, living in country Victoria, Bendigo. He was pretty switched on to the woes of the world: justice, war, environment etc but describes himself as being a bit of a drifter: “I was socially aware, but directionless”. OzGREEN ran a Youth LEAD in Bendigo that same year and Nick’s mum suggested he should go along.

The resulting journey has taken Nick from being a passionate drifter to an astute and determined leader. He believes that the skills he has learnt and the experiences he has had by being involved with OzGREEN have enabled him to act on one of his overriding concerns – a prevailing apathy in young people.

Case Study - Mirabai

Mirabai went to her first Youth LEAD workshop in 2004. Normally Mirabai wouldn’t have done workshops or put herself in a situation where she had to talk in front of strangers; ever since she was little she had been gripped by shyness. However, life had recently changed in a major way for Mirabai. Just over three months before the workshop her young nephew Finn had died from a brain tumour, to add to this, she had recently had to quit her job, pulled out of her music course and gave up playing her beloved piano due to chronic tendonitis in her wrists. Mirabai was in a bit of a state.

Case Study - Alex

cootagirls2Growing up in Coota, Alex felt that she and her friends were different to the majority of other kids, because they were interested in the environment. But it was this uniqueness that led Alex and her friends on a journey of amazing adventures from their quiet hometown to the hustle and bustle of India. They were regular high school students, who were inspired and in turn become inspiring change makers. They have taken on their local council, won the support of their local community and given back meaning to the name ‘Cootamundra’, all due to their core work of rehabilitating wetland ecosystems in their home town. Because of her experiences, Alex is now focused on study, a career and a way of life she is really passionate about
