Our first memories of River Ganga are of a late winters evening in January 1992. The River seemed to stretch away forever into the last twinges of light. Magical. Mystical. Majestic. Magnificent.

We had just arrived at Tulsi Ghat on our first ever visit to India. We were there to participate in the first River Ganga Teachers Forum - at the invitation of Fran Peavey. Little did we know that we were about to change our lives forever and were at the beginning of dear friendships that would span the rest of our lives and thousands of miles between India, Australia and USA.

Many things stand out from that first visit – the significance of which continue to be embedded in our beings:

Sankat Mochan Foundation – Swatcha Ganga Abhiyan

Not a drop of sewage flowing into religious bathing areas of Varanasi.

River Ganga (Ganges) is one of the greatest rivers of the world. For hundreds of millions of Indians, Ganga is the foundation of spiritual and physical life. Unfortunately Ganga is severely polluted by domestic sewage.

The Swatcha Ganga Abhiyan (Clean Ganges Campaign) is an initiative of the Sankat Mochan Foundation (the Foundation) a small not for profit, non-secular organisation based in Varanasi. Founded in 1982, the campaign is spearheaded by Dr Veer Bhadra Mishra, former Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at Banaras Hindu University and prominent spiritual leader (Mahant) in Varanasi (Banaras).

The Swatcha Ganga Campaign brings together science, education, technology, culture, tradition and peoples’ participation.
