    About MYRiver

    Since 2002, OzGREEN has involved over 60 regional communities and 6,000 young people in MYRiver in the Brisbane, Bremer, Murray-Darling, Hunter, Cooks, Georges, Nepean, Onkaparinga, Yarra and Derwent River basins and internationally in India, East Timor, Pakistan and Central America.

    The MYRiver process builds collaborative relationships with indigenous leaders, business, government, non-government organisations, local communities, young people, schools and adults. Case studies from OzGREEN’s Australian and International programs, enable young people to gain first hand understanding of the global nature of local challenges.

    About MYRiver Bellingen 2014

    MYRiver Bellingen 2014 was a whole river basin youth engagement and environmental education project for schools in the Bellingen Shire, held on 19-23 September 2014.

    The program enabled young people to become citizen scientists, test the health of the environment, identify key environmental threats and values, develop their own vision and implement their own action plans to sustain the health of their local waterways.

    Funds raised from OzGREEN's SavetheTurtle crowdfunding campaign went go towards this initiative.

    Key Activities

    • Field Work - 19 & 20 September : One day field work per school, conducting snapshot of ecosystem health (water quality testing, flow, biodiversity, and community attitude surveys)
    • Youth Congress - 21-22-23 September : Students analyse field data, identify ecological threats and values, develop a river vision and action plans.
    • Community Forum - 23 September : 2-hour forum facilitated by students to report back the results of their investigations, vision and action plans and engage community support.
    • Bellingen Turtlefest - 1 October : Presentation by students at the Bellingen Turtle Festival to report back the results of their investigations, vision and action plans
    • Youth Action : Young people implement action plans with OzGREEN mentoring and support

    Outcomes

    • Youth participation in real world science.
    • Youth voice and vision for the future of their river.
    • Innovative action plans developed to achieve this vision.
    • Strengthened youth capacity to measure, analyse, reflect, plan, vision and act.
    • Strengthened whole catchment thinking and links between schools and their communities.
    • Increased commitment to environmental stewardship and water conservation.
    • Increased active youth participation in the democratic process and civil society.

    Festival for Our Future

    In 2014 the young people involved were concerned about the health of their river, and organised the "Festival for Our Future" at Northbank Community Garden, to raise community awareness about riverhealth. We were delighted that nearly 500 people came to the event - clearly the people of Bello care about their river. They came to support local youth and listen to them. Six months later the turtle tragedy hit the Bellingen community like a hurricane.

  • Become a Bellingen Riverwatch citizen scientist

    'Bellingen Riverwatch: Our River, Our Future' is an innovative citizen science program, which aims to create opportunities for scientists and community to work together to monitor and care for the health of the Bellinger and Kalang Rivers.

    Collecting monthly water quality data requires consistent long-term effort and a core part of the program will be the development of a group of passionate and dedicated volunteer citizen scientists. Volunteers will be trained in water quality monitoring techniques by lead scientists in the field, and will assist in a monthly water quality snapshot of river health.

    All volunteers will receive training to confidently carry out water quality testing in carefully selected sites across the Bellingen Shire. As a volunteer, you will have many opportunities to learn, ongoing feedback and get to contribute to our river and threatened species conservation, including the critically endangered Bellinger River Snapping Turtle.

    To get involved fill out your details below and we will get in touch with more information!

    YLTW Global Seeder

    From 25 years of experience, OzGREEN knows that young people have the ingenuity, passion and energy to solve the biggest challenges the world faces for a sustainable future. They just need to be equipped with the right skills. That’s why we’ve been delivering award winning leadership initiatives that empower and educate youth to become global change makers.

    As a valued friend of OzGREEN and by joining our regular givers’ program you will become an 'YLTW Global Seeder'. You will be helping us to continue funding our vital Youth Leading the World Program (YLTW), so we can provide training for more young people and enable them to become advocates and change-makers for the environment.

    Here’s an example of what your regular donations over one year could achieve:

    $10 per month will enable one young person to to participate in YLTW;

    ➤ $20 per month will support a youth team to deliver on their sustainability action plan;

    $50 per month will train and support one volunteer Facilitator to run YLTW in their own region;

    $100 per month will train and support a whole team young people to run YLTW in their region;

    $150 per month will pay for an entire YLTW program in critical climate change impacted regions globally (e.g. Bangladesh, Kiribati)

    ➤ $400 per month will pay for YLTW to run in one region in Australia

    OzGREEN thanks you for your support.

    Donate to East Timor

    This Christmas why not give a gift to someone you do not know and you will never meet, but who will be forever grateful that you thought of them. Donate a small amount of money and you can provide a family with the basic necessities which we, in Australia take for granted.

    Bellingen Riverwatch

    It is difficult to describe the extent of the concern our community felt for our river in 2015, when we lost an estimated 90% of our beautiful turtles in an approximate 6-week period. Bellingen Riverwatch has empowered our community to transform their concern into dedicated, constructive action.

    We thank you for your support because we simply can't do it without you.
