OzGREEN is delighted to announce that it’s Co-Founder Sue Lennox is the 2020 Senior Australian of the Year Award (NSW) recipient. Sue will now join other state and territory award recipients at the National Australia Day Awards Ceremony in Canberra on 25th January 2020.
OzGREEN’s CEO Anton Juodvalkis said “I am thrilled that Sue’s important environmental work has been recognised by the National Australia Day Council. Sue was one of 3000 nominees, so to be the NSW Senior Australian of the Year is an incredible achievement”.
Sue and her late husband Colin co-founded OzGREEN almost thirty years ago. As school teachers during the eighties, they were deeply concerned that their students were feeling anxious and distressed about the future of the planet. However, they noticed when they facilitated and empowered their students to become self-directed environmental leaders, anxiety transformed into hope.
Sue and Colin quickly realised the power and importance of self-belief. They left their jobs as teachers to design and deliver environmental education programs that focused on active participatory leadership. Since founding OzGREEN, Sue and her team have developed sustainability programs for over 1600 communities across Australia, India, East Timor, Central America, Papua New Guinea and Pakistan.
OzGREEN’s flagship initiative is Youth Leading the World. This highly participatory international program enables young people to connect with others around the globe to tackle environmental challenges and develop positive action plans.
Sue said “I have seen young people become incredible influencers - through their actions they have changed their communities. We have essentially been briefed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to completely redesign our societies in the shortest space of time. The kind of innovation and leadership work that we do is absolutely critical to this and it certainly gets me out of bed every morning."
Youth Leading the World is specifically designed to turn despair into inspired action. Many young people are expressing their environmental concerns at the School Strikes for Climate. While this is important, it is not sufficient because it’s asking someone else to change. We must also take personal action to be the change that is needed.
